Common Questions

  • Is it normal to feel nervous when starting therapy?

It’s totally normal to feel nervous about starting therapy. Therapy is an invitation into a new kind of relationship with yourself where you get to decide whose support you enlist for help in better navigating the issues currently dominating your life story. It took courage to arrive here at this website in search of a therapist. Problems thrive in isolation and silence so this is an important first step and new chapter recovering and empowering the lost parts of your experience, emotions and identity where thriving and wholeness reside.

In cultures that privilege individualism such as ours, emotions and relationships are rarely given the importance and value that they deserve, leaving many people feeling at a loss when it comes to supportive and meaningful ways to better understand and move through the experiences and feelings we go through in life. Very often, our minds try to deal with things in ways that increase our suffering, ignoring or diminishing the important feelings and experiences we have in community with others that provide glimpses into a life not dominated by the current problems at hand. Let us collaborate together to reconnect with the movement of your stories, hopes and innate capacities where self-discovery and joy reside.

  • How do I know if a therapist is the right one for me?

Therapy is a collaboration that starts with the relationship. The therapeutic relationship itself is considered to be the most important aspect in facilitating the change that you’re inviting into your life so it's really important to feel comfortable with the therapist you choose. Give yourself a little time to feel it out and trust your instincts. Notice how they listen to your stories, if you feel seen and heard, as well as how you feel about the conversations that you construct together. You might ask them about their philosophy of change, how they view their clients and their client’s problems, and what indicates to them that a client may be ready to terminate therapy. It is my own practice to check-in with clients throughout the course of therapy to ensure that our work together is charting the course in your intended direction of healing and growth. As a mental health provider, being asked these questions during our consultation would indicate to me that a client was serious about working to meet their future goals and aspirations for their life.

  • What do you charge for your services and do you take insurance?

My standard fee is $145 for a 50-minute individual session. I also offer some reduced fee structure as well as a sliding scale option. If you are unable to pay the standard hourly fee, please talk to me about alternative payment options. Many clients begin to experience the benefits of counseling in the first 1-3 sessions. Private paying does allow for more flexibility to individualize services specifically for each client while avoiding the rigid guidelines set forth by insurance companies.

Additionally, I am also credentialed with both Kaiser Permanente and Aetna insurers and I am able to inquire with your insurance concerning eligibility and benefits information.

I am happy to provide a month-end superbill upon request if you would like to submit claims to your insurance company against your out-of-network benefits. Although I cannot guarantee that the claim will be accepted, some insurance companies reimburse for out-of-network providers. Please check with your insurance company for coverage.
